Certainly, some questions will depend on the type of service you need.  Generally, we suggest you ask any potential contractor the following questions:

• Is the company licensed through the State of Wisconsin?
• Is the company insured and willing to provide proof of insurance?
• Will a detailed written contract be provided listing all labor and materials?
• Is the company willing to provide a list of references?  Pictures of their work?
• Does the company guaranty its work?  For how long?  Is there a written warranty?
• Who actually performs the work (subcontractors, employees, etc)?

This is just a small sample of questions you should ask, and it certainly is not meant to be all-inclusive.  Also consider checking the potential contractor out with the Better Business Bureau, Angie's List, or other consumer organizations. 

The lowest estimate is not always the best deal.  You should make sure that you are comparing apples to apples, so to speak.  Each estimate you receive should detail all of the labor and materials that the contractor will provide.  Perhaps a higher-priced estimate includes all materials while a lower-priced one does not.  Also, consider the questions above when determining the best deal.  It may be safer to pay a little more and hire a contractor that is fully insured and licensed.
